Advantages of Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:
The originality and genius of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is found in the manner in which students are taught and trained: Live sparring or randori, also known as “rolling,” where students try to apply technique on an uncooperative, fully resisting, opponent constitutes a significant portion of most training sessions. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more effective than many traditional martial arts because of the removal of “dangerous” elements (such as strikes and kicks) so that students can train at full speed, with full power, on resisting opponents with the “safe” techniques that remain.
The “live” training method with safe techniques minimizes risk of injury to the students, provides crucial expertise in applying techniques on a resisting opponent, and provides a more thorough workout. Safe technique does not mean ineffective, but technique that can be used without harming your opponent in live training so long as the participants agree to stop when the techniques have been successfully applied or the opponent asks you to stop by “tapping out.”
The live training method develops greater physical and mental agility because students become familiar with the feeling of applying technique on an uncooperative, resisting human being, which is far more difficult than applying technique on a cooperative training partner in a choreographed manner, as is common in most traditional martial arts training.
